Hong Kong celebrates 150

Cornellians came together for one of the biggest Big Red gatherings in Hong Kong!

Due to an overwhelming response, all events were sold out as Cornellians celebrated the Sesquicentennial.

Event Highlights

December 13

Sponsored by local Cornell groups, academic and social events kicked off the festivities, starting on Saturday afternoon.

December 14

Cornellians explored Hong Kong on their own or with the merry company of alumni and friends.

December 15

The Big Idea: Cornell Celebrates 150

Cornellians enjoyed a luncheon featuring Bob Miller '55, co-founder of Duty Free Shoppers and the first president of the Cornell Club of Hong Kong.

In the evening, Cornellians came together for a sold out showing of The Big Idea! Cornell Celebrates 150—the official Sesquicentennial celebration—6:30 to 10:30 p.m., at the Convention Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Special guests and speakers for The Big Idea! Cornell Celebrates 150 included:

  • David J. Skorton, President of Cornell University
  • Fred Logevall, Vice Provost for International Affairs and 2013 Pulitzer Prize Winner
  • Glenn Altschuler PhD '76, Dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions and the Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies
  • Sherman Cochran, the Huh Shih Professor of Chinese History
  • Soumitra Dutta, Dean of the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management
  • Michael Kotlikoff, the Austin O. Hooey Dean of Veterinary Medicine
